I cut my way into the horse business by apprenticing 6 years under cutting horse trainers. I put the 2 year old year on Nurse Kitty who made the finals in the toughest cutting event on the planet, the NCHA World Championship Futurity, and have started many finalists in other aged events. I have started cutting horses who have cummulatively won well over a million dollars. I recently competed at the largest expo in the world, The Midwest Horse Fair, in the Working Equitation Cattle Trials on the Chilean Team. This was my first time ever competing in this discipline and we won. Working cattle horseback is about as good as it gets in my opinion, and I’m excited to share my knowledge on this subject with you!

Cattle Clinics just might be my favorite format and I can’t wait to work cattle in Australia! This is one of those areas of horses where it really is about mastering the basics. You can easily go faster, uglier, and more out of control working cattle on a horse, but it won’t be better until those foundational skills are understood and implemented correctly. There are also a lot of nuances about how the horse stops and has their legs set so they can readily go forward or turn without having to take an unnecessary step. Reading the cattle is an added element. Most people have enough trouble reading their horse, much less a whole other animal to worry about. Then there’s the most wonderful aspect that working cattle gives our horses. I call it right now. A Reiner or Dressage rider knows when and where that next maneuver is coming. They get to set it up and wait for it. Working cattle really is different from anything else. You don’t know when that stop is coming. Was I supposed to turn there? We require a level of responsiveness and partnership from our horses that no other discipline can boast. We need our horses to be with us and respond right now, even if it is a surprise.

If you’d like to watch my Working Equitation Cattle Trail run at the Midwest Horse Fair, here’s the entire competition. We were the first team and keep in mind that Gustavo and I had never done this before. We were learning new rules during the competition.
