You may have some feelings or expectations about laying horses down. I would say don’t judge this technique until you’ve experienced it firsthand. Having spent 30 years starting colts and working with problem’d horses, I have had cause to lay down over 800 horses in my career.
Let’s discuss what this will/won’t do, what types of horses are good candidates, and what skills you should already have to take on this task. Ultimately, we want you and the horses to be safe throughout the process and finish it in a much better frame of mind.
This video does not depict, nor recommend using brute force. You’ll see regular rewards and releases. The horse will lick and chew throughout. The lead rope guiding the horse to the ground will be handled as elegantly as a bridle rein. We use and recommend feel when doing this. The results speak for themselves.
This video starts out with a description and explanation of what laying horses down is all about, what’s required of you, and why you might want to apply this technique.
We then use an older gentle horse to show you the set ups and some variations you might use depending on your circumstances. You will see this horse layed down.
Max is the ultimate star of the show. He’s a legitimate problem horse with years of issues. You’ll watch him layed down in real time in this unedited clip with me voicing-over the video, explaining and pointing out what to do and look for. You can judge the results for yourself.
